Single phase or three phase? How to tell in two minutes
Most homes are single phase. Here's how to check yours, and why it matters for solar.
Why it matters
The electricity network limits how big a solar system each home can connect, and three-phase homes can usually connect more. It also decides which inverter your home needs.
Three ways to check
- Look at your switchboard: a main switch that's three switches joined together often means three phase. A single one usually means single phase.
- Check your meter or bill: some show 'three phase' or list three sets of readings.
- Ask an electrician, or tick 'not sure' and we'll check for you.
Only a licensed electrician should open or work on your switchboard. Looking at the front is fine; leave the rest to the professionals.
