Looking after your solar panels: cleaning, checks and warranties

Panels need very little care. Here's what's worth doing, what to leave alone, and what the warranties usually cover.

Cleaning

  • Tilted panels are usually cleaned by the rain.
  • Flat panels, or homes near the coast, dusty roads or trees, may need an occasional clean.
  • Hose from the ground, or use a professional. Please don't climb onto the roof.

Easy checks

  • Look at your system's app now and then: a sudden drop on a sunny day is worth a question.
  • Check the inverter for warning lights.
  • Keep an eye on trees growing into the panels' sun.

What the warranties usually cover

  • Panels: a product warranty and a performance warranty, often 25 years or more.
  • Inverter: usually a shorter warranty than the panels.
  • Battery: often around 10 years.
  • Installation: the workmanship, from whoever installed it.
